After the completion of the Beidou enhanced system, the Beidou satellite navigation system will provide centimeter level positioning services for users within China, with some areas offering positioning services up to centimeter level. At the 6th China Satellite Navigation Academic Annual Conference, which opened today, Ran Chengqi, spokesperson for the Beidou Satellite Navigation System and director of the China Satellite Navigation System Management Office, introduced the application progress of Beidou navigation. He also revealed that China will launch 3-4 new generation Beidou navigation satellites this year.

The theme of this year's conference is "Openness, Connectivity, and Win Win". Officials from satellite navigation system regulatory authorities, internationally renowned experts, scholars, and business representatives from countries and regions such as China, the United States, Russia, and Europe gave reports on the latest developments and trends in the field of satellite navigation. Over 2000 attending representatives will have in-depth exchanges on technical issues such as the application of the Beidou Navigation System, precision orbit determination and positioning, as well as policy regulations, standards, and intellectual property rights.

The construction of China's Beidou satellite navigation system is implementing a "three-step" development strategy, following the overall idea of "regional first, global second, active first, passive second". Since providing official operational services to the Asia Pacific region in December 2012, the Beidou satellite navigation system has maintained continuous and stable operation. As an important spatial information infrastructure of the country, the Beidou Satellite Navigation System has formed a relatively complete industrial system including basic products, application terminals, and operational services. Key technologies such as independent Beidou chips and modules have made comprehensive breakthroughs, and its performance and price are basically equivalent to similar international products. Its sales have exceeded 6 million pieces and it has been widely used in transportation, marine fisheries, hydrological monitoring, meteorological forecasting, geodetic surveying, disaster relief and reduction, mobile navigation and other fields. At present, the Beidou satellite navigation system has been accepted and recognized by the International Maritime Organization as the third satellite navigation system in the world, and will enter international organizations such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Mobile Communications Project (3GPP).

At the end of March 2015, the first new generation Beidou navigation satellite was successfully launched, marking the expansion of the Beidou satellite navigation system from regional operation to global operation. The performance of the new generation of Beidou navigation satellites has significantly improved compared to the previously launched Beidou navigation satellites. According to the construction plan, the Beidou satellite navigation system will form a global operational service capability by 2020, providing higher precision services to users worldwide.

Ran Chengqi introduced that the construction of Beidou satellite navigation system will seize the development opportunity of the country's implementation of the "the Belt and Road" strategic plan, deepen cooperation with other global satellite navigation systems, jointly promote the international application of Beidou/GNSS, and build Beidou satellite navigation system into an internationally renowned Chinese brand.
